Fn Browning Model 1910 Serial Numbers 8,8/10 2409 votes

Good morning gentleman it's one of my my first posts here in this forum, so let me say hello to all of you. I'm collecting parabellums and rifles (german an austrian ordonance). A friend asked me if i have any connections to determine a production date of his fn. Reading you forum for years, i thought, maybe gunboards could help first information i have, the serial number is 5230xx second, i found an proofing, ELG with crown, with is according my documents, not a nitro proof. Can you gentleman help to determine the production date and solve the riddle about the blackpowderproof. Best regards from austria, wolfganggo. Crown over ELG/* in oval is the definitive black powder proof for breech-loading guns, small bore guns and handguns, since July 1893 according to my reference.

This FN Model 1922 is a bring-back that was acquired from the son of a World War II soldier. The serial number is not only stamped on the frame, but also on the slide. The 1910 FN Browning Pistol Also Known as the “New Model” Browning. Sep 10, 2013  I have an FN model 1910 serial number 216194 (32 ACP) in nickel. The Belgian proof marks are stamped on the frame and on the barrel. The barrel is also stamped 5653 (proceeded & followed with an up side down T).

Lion over PV is nitro proof for rifled barrel & parabellum pistols, in use since 1924 per my references. Almost all (in my experience, all) Belgian arms will show the ELG/* in oval proof (with or without crown, depending on date), with additional marks indicative of other proofing. This one is nitro proofed, as shown by the Lion over PV proof, and (if my refereces are correct) sometime after 1924. Look on pg 91 of the FN book by Anthony Vanderlinden 'FN Browning Pistols: Side-Arms that Shaped World History'. There are three entries for the letter A and 2 of them are postwar. Besides that I have a FN 1900 that has the Lion/PV, *H and the 'Perron' tower proof.

The only H listed in the book is Christophe Woit 1938-1968. According to the book the 'Perron' proof was used until 1924 so how could these two proofs be on the same gun when they come from two different time periods? The only logical conclusion I could come up with is that they reused the letters. Look on pg 91 of the FN book by Anthony Vanderlinden 'FN Browning Pistols: Side-Arms that Shaped World History'.

Measuring but 6' overall in length and weighing just under 1 lb., 8 ozs., this semi-automatic became an instant hit, enjoying brisk civilian and police sales—though military interest in the piece was lukewarm at best. Things changed in 1922 when the gun was revamped by increasing the 1910’s 3½' barrel length by an inch, which also required changes to the slide and slide extension. Pecs kartochki. Later, the grip was extended to accommodate a magazine of greater capacity, increasing the original 1910’s capacity of seven shots of.32 ACP and six shots of.380 ACP by two rounds each. Initially adopted by the Yugoslavian military (which was the prime mover in the gun’s alterations), the 1922 gained momentum on the world market and was eventually used by police and/or armies in Belgium, Denmark, Finland France, Greece, Holland, Romania and Turkey. When the Germans overran Belgium in 1940, they commandeered the FN facilities and turned production to their own ends, incorporating the P35 High Power and Model 1922 into the Wehrmacht. Occupation-era Model 1922s will exhibit different acceptance marks (waffenamts) depending upon when a particular gun was manufactured.

Both.32 ACP and.380 ACP versions were issued. Early specimens, some of which were constructed of parts already on-hand when FN was taken over, sport a commercial-style finish and have black plastic stocks emblazoned with the “FN” logo, while later pistols show a diminution of quality and are fitted with checkered walnut grips. German-issue 1922s have an eagle test proof, and some early guns may also be seen with Belgian proofs. Eventually some 363,200 1922s were built between 1940 and 1945.
